great falls shelter

Situated in Virginia’s Great Falls National Park, this shelter and overlook is designed to be a refuge for visitors to the park. Placed on the slope of a ridge north of the Falls for which the park is formed, the shelter provides panoramic views of the river valley below. With a linear program that becomes more private as one traverses through the structure, visitors can use the shelter as a getaway from other, busier parts of the park. The facade strategy also aids in this, with variation in opening changing based on intended views and programmatic zones.
